SUMMARY:Live from Endurance | Awesome Engineering!
DESCRIPTION:How can we build ships that are strong enough to handle the toughest seas and the thickest ice? What can we learn by closely monitoring the S.A. Agulhas II as it travels through both these environments? Let’s ask Endurance22 Expedition members Dr. Annie Bekker (Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa) and Dr. Jukka Tuhkuri (Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Aalto University in Finland)\, both of whom have been doing just that throughout the expedition journey thus far. After you meet Drs. Bekker and Tuhkuri\, you’ll never look at ships the same way again! \nWant to join this event live? SUMMARY:Polar Expeditions: From Past to Present
DESCRIPTION:Join CIRES and Reach the World for a special joint livestream event! Polar expedition members Lianna Nixon (MOSAiC) and Timothy Jacob (Endurance22) will compare and contrast two modern polar expeditions and the historical expeditions (Fram Expedition and Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition\, respectively) that inspired them. We invite classrooms and the public to join in the discussion on polar science\, the study of sea ice\, and what we learn from voyages to remote regions of the world. The presentation will be followed by a live Q&A session. \nThe MOSAiC Expedition was inspired by Fridtjof Nansen’s 1893 expedition during which he successfully froze a specially-designed ship\, the Fram\, into Arctic sea ice in an attempt to drift to the North Pole. The Polarstern research vessel was frozen in the ice for a year to drift with the ice floe and study the changing Arctic ecosystem. \nThe Endurance22 Expedition was organized and funded by The Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust (FMHT) to locate\, survey and film the wreck of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ship Endurance\, which was trapped and crushed by the ice and sank in the Weddell Sea in 1915. \nTimothy Jacob is Director of the Traveler Program at Reach the World\, a global education non-profit based in New York City. He was the onboard Education & Outreach lead for the Endurance22 Expedition\, using virtual exchange to connect 30\,000+ K-12 students around the world with expedition team members throughout the search for Sir Ernest Shackleton’s lost ship\, Endurance\, in the Weddell Sea off Antarctica. \nLianna Nixon is a photojournalist and documentary filmmaker. Prior to graduate school\, she worked with storytellers across the globe to capture the beauty and plight of our planet. She is currently a graduate student in the School of Education: Learning Sciences Human Development at the University of Colorado Boulder. Her research focuses on climate change and environmental education through immersive storytelling platforms and the relationship between youth climate activism and civic spaces. \n————————————————————————————————————————————————- \nWant to join this event live? SUMMARY:Livestream with Endurance22 Expedition Sub-Sea Manager\, Nico Vincent
DESCRIPTION:Reach the World is excited to welcome veteran deep-sea explorer and Endurance22 Expedition Sub-Sea Manager\, Nico Vincent! Nico is the mastermind behind the successful plan to locate and map “the most challenging shipwreck in the world”–Shackleton’s Endurance–in the icy Weddell Sea off Antarctica. When faced with a seemingly impossible set of environmental challenges\, Nico devised creative and effective solutions that have redefined what is possible in the world of underwater exploration. How did he do it? Let’s ask him! \nThis event is recommended for high school students and students with a special interest in marine robotics and deep-sea exploration. \nWant to join this event live?
