The S.A. Agulhas II is loaded up with supplies and the international crew is onboard, it has left its home port South Africa and is headed for the Weddell Sea in Antarctica, to begin the search for Ernest Shakleton’s Endurance. Over the next few weeks we’ll join the ship live with Tim Jacob from Reach the World and meet different members of the team who will share their specialities as we explore the ship and dig into the mission to find one of the world’s most famous wrecks!
This event is a special opportunity for classrooms in the UK to register for live camera spots to interact or to tune in via the live stream on YouTube, sending in questions via the live chat.
Joining Tim for this event will be expedition leader John Shears, director of exploration Mensun Bound and expedition doctor Dr. Lucy Coulter. John is a polar geographer and environmental scientist with more than 25 years of experience working in both Antarctica and the Arctic with the British Antarctic Survey and the Scott Polar Research Institute at the University of Cambridge. In 2019, Dr. Shears was awarded the Polar Medal by Her Majesty the Queen for outstanding achievement and service in the field of polar research. Mensun is an accomplished marine archeologist who has traveled the world in search of famous shipwrecks. From 6th-century B.C. Etruscan shipwrecks in the Mediterranean Sea to sunken WWII battleships resting beneath thousands of feet of ocean water, Mensun has spent a career searching for answers that can only be found underwater.
